Paint Recycling Fundraiser 2017

earthday2017
On Earth Day 2017 (Saturday, April 22), the Scouts of Troop 324 conducted the 1st Annual Earth Day Old-Paint-Recycling-And-Disposal Drive!!

The 1st-ever Troop 324 paint recycling drive was a success!
img_1313
We handled more than 1000 old gallon and quart cans of paint and stain, and delivered them to the Johnson County Waste Recycling Facility. The recycling facility disposes of hazardous materials, and recycles by making usable paints and stains available for non-profits and charities. We made new friends, helped the environment, increased awareness of an important ecology issue, earned community service hours, and raised more than $1700 to support Scouts and the ideals of Scouting.
Thank you to everyone who participated. You are making a difference! Cool!

Troop 324 is a camping troop in Overland Park that produces Scouts and Eagles with a love for protecting and sustaining our Mother Earth.

Our objectives:

  • to raise awareness of ecology
  • to encourage people to help protect the Earth
  • to teach how to properly dispose of hazardous waste
  • to raise some funds for Troop 324 Camp Scholarships and equipment

Lots of homeowners in Overland Park and Kansas City save old paint and oil-based stains long past their useful lives. These old materials are stored in garages and basements around KC, and the chance that a container or can might leak, rust, or otherwise allow these unused hazardous materials to  contaminate our precious environment grows larger every year.

You can help!! Friendly Scouts from Troop 324 will collect latex or oil-based paints and stains, and inspect, catalog and sort the containers, and safely transport them to the Johnson County Waste Recycling Facility for disposal. Suggested donation is $2 per gallon, and $1 per quart, but we will transport all your containers. We appreciate every donation; all proceeds go to support Scouts and Scouting in Kansas City.

SPEAK UP Walk 2016

The 2016 SPEAK UP Walk for Mental Health Awareness

20161009_102236_hdrOn a beautiful Sunday morning, October 9, 2016, some scouts and leaders from Troop 324 participated in the 2016 Speak Up Walk to raise awareness for mental health issues.

This event honored the memory on Jason Arkin, our brother Troop 324 Eagle Scout, who died by suicide in 2015. Participants walked the trail at Ironwoods Park, heard some inspirational speakers and a lot of important information about how we should be aware of and actively talk about mental illness, depression, and other issues.

Maybe the coolest moment the SPEAKUP team released a dozen white doves, who gathered into a flock, circled the area 3 times, and then flew away into the sky. This was truly an inspirational moment.

For more information, see the SpeakUp web site.

Troop 324 honors Jason’s memory. We are proud Jason was a Scout in Troop 324.
